Why are there spots on my maple leaves?!

Numerous spots on maple leaves are a concern for homeowners. A common cause is tar disease, a cosmetic problem that usually does not affect the health of the tree.

Homeowners with maple trees are calling the Michigan State University Extension Lawn and Garden hotline concerned about numerous leaf spots. After receiving more information from callers, most people notice symptoms of a fungal disease known as tar spot. The disease is caused by several fungi in the genus Rhytisma and affects silver, sugar, red and Norway maples, as well as their relative, boxwood.

Symptoms

Tar stain is one of the most visible and easily diagnosed maple diseases. It is also one of the least destructive diseases for the host. The first symptoms of tar stains usually appear in early summer as small (less than 1/8 inch in diameter) light green to yellowish-green spots. As summer approaches, the spots increase in size and the color becomes more intense. On the upper surface, small black, resinous, raised structures form within these yellow spots. The black spots continue to increase in diameter and thickness to the point that it looks like someone has sprayed tar on the leaves. (This is the time when homeowners become quite alarmed.) Symptoms are more common on trees growing in moist, sheltered areas.

Hit

This disease is usually a cosmetic problem and does not affect the long-term health of the tree. Severe infections can cause leaves to drop prematurely, a circumstance that causes great consternation for homeowners because lawns are littered and typically need to be raked before fall.

Management

Because tar spot fungi overwinter on fallen leaves, the most effective method of controlling them is to rake and destroy the leaves in the fall. This will reduce the number of overwintering "spots" (containing fungal reproductive structures) that can infect new leaves the following spring. Neighbors must also rake and destroy infested leaves to be effective. Mulching leaves will kill many spots before they mature, but the mulch pile should be covered or turned before new leaves begin to emerge in the spring.

Application of fungicides is possible when high infection levels become unacceptable, but controlling tar spots is challenging, especially on mature maples. Additionally, if others in the area are not managing their tree disease with fungicides or proper sanitation, spraying may be a waste of time and money.

What to do if your Japanese maple tree has crunchy or brown leaves

We love Japanese maples for their elegant shape and showy color. But like all our trees, we don't like to see their glow dimmed by leaf problems.

When one of our readers saw her Japanese maple leaves quickly turning brown, she sought advice, asking if fertilizer or water could help.

To answer our reader's question (and hopefully yours too), let's look at a few ways to revive a struggling Japanese maple.

Three Reasons Why Japanese Maple Trees Have Brown or Crispy Leaves

Before diagnosing your tree, think about where it is planted, how much sun or shade it receives, and how often you water it. All of these can affect the appearance of your Japanese maple tree.

Too much sun? Japanese Maple Leaf Scorch

How much sun does your Japanese maple get? If the bright rays persist most of the day, the tree is likely suffering from environmental leaf scorch. Here's how to fix it.

Too little water? Underwater symptoms of Japanese maple

Let's say your tree is in a darker location, but it still has dull brown leaves that are crunchy and curled.

In this case, your tree is probably simply not getting enough water. Japanese maples may be small, but they dry out fairly easily without a constant dose of moisture. Do this quick check to make sure your tree isn't getting enough water.

If your tree is really low on water, give it that much water every week from now on!

Noticed any errors? Japanese Maple Pests Causing Brown Leaves

If the soil is wet and the sun is not to blame, what could it be? Japanese maples are fairly robust trees, but they are not immune to pests. Their main competitors are aphids and scale.

The good news is that aphids or scale likely won't kill your Japanese maple, but they will put up a stubborn fight, turning the leaves brown and causing them to drop early.

Learn the difference between aphids and scales and how to control them both.

Treatment of black spots on maple leaves

Ah, the iconic maple leaf! This is one of the most recognizable tree leaves and it usually looks fresh! The leaves shimmer green in the spring and turn yellow, orange and red in the fall.

But what if your maple leaves develop unsightly brown or black spots during the summer? Is your tree in trouble or even dying?

Take a deep breath! Although these stains look alarming, they are just tar stains, a fungal disease that does not pose a major problem to the health of your tree. Learn more about maple tar stains and how to help your tree recover below.

Maple resin stain: wood fungus that can be adjusted

What is maple resin?

There are several types of fungi that cause large brown or black spots on maple trees. All of them are called tar stains and most often affect:

  • Elderberry box
  • Common maple
  • Oregon maple
  • Red maple
  • Silver maple
  • Sugar maple
  • Sycamore

As with most tree fungi, maple gum is more likely to form if your area receives a lot of rain!

When will I see maple tar stains?

The spots usually begin to develop in early to mid June. The dots will then be tiny and light green. So you probably didn't notice them.

Around August, these tiny spots become significantly wider and thicker. It will literally look like there are lumps of tar stuck to the leaves. You may even see spots on your maple seeds—unless you were smart enough to plant a seedless maple without helicopter seeds.

Are those black spots on maple leaves harming the tree?

Maple tar stains are primarily a cosmetic problem. The spots ruin the appearance of your tree and can even cause leaves to drop early.

But this is about the scale of the problem. Maple resin stains rarely harm the health of the tree.

Is there a cure for black spots on maple leaves?

If you're really fed up with maple gum stain, you can ask a certified arborist and pesticide applicator to apply a fungicide next spring. This is usually only recommended if your tree is constantly getting maple tar or it is a common problem in your area. Most tar stains are considered aesthetic and this method is usually not necessary.

Additionally, to be effective, the fungicide must cover every leaf, which can be quite a feat for mature maples. This is why it is usually better to treat and apply maple tar fungicide on smaller trees.

Can I prevent resin stains from recurring?

The best way to get rid of maple tar and prevent it from happening is with a little elbow grease! When leaves fall, rake and destroy all leaves. Try to remove every leaf from the area, which in turn will remove most of the tar stain fungal spores.

ASK OF THE MONTH: Why are my purple leaf Japanese maples growing green leaves?

ASK MONTY

Why is my purple leaf Japanese maple growing green leaves?

Monty Don for MailOnline Updated: 17:27 GMT, 8 December 2010

Pruning: The best way to take cuttings from a pomegranate bush is from annual half-ripe or deciduous cuttings

Five years ago I was given a Japanese maple with purple leaves. However, this year I see green leaves sprouting. Why? The tree is also a little wide. Can I trim it?

David Woodfine, Merseyside

The questions are interconnected. Your problem is caused by the tint. Maple, such as Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum', is naturally purple, but its primary color is green. It turns purple in response to sunlight - remove the sun and the foliage turns green. So prune it over the next three months to let in more light.

I have a pomegranate bush that produces wonderful orange flowers every year. I tried cuttings in the fall, when it was already in bloom and blooming, but without success. I have also tried cutting cuttings when there are no leaves on the stem. What am I doing wrong?

Shirley Cole, London

It is best to take cuttings from annual semi-ripe cuttings or hardwood cuttings. And the time to do it is now. Trim new shoots to about 30 cm (12 inches) long, holding a plug of old wood at the base and trimming away the foliage.

Place them 15–22 cm (6–9 in) deep in a well-drained cutting mix, on a heated bench or mat in the greenhouse.

Leave over the winter, protecting the cuttings until new foliage appears. Then replant them individually and continue to grow for three years before planting.

13 years ago we planted a cherry tree. It is now 6 m (20 ft) tall but has never produced cherries. For the first five years I trimmed it every spring and then left it. Something went wrong?

Mrs P. Humphrey, Southampton

You don't say what kind of tree you have, but cherries rarely produce edible fruit unless they are protected because birds eat them before they ripen. Not all cherries are self-fertilizing, so it may be that yours doesn't have a pollinator. I suggest "May Duke", "Stella" or "Sunburst". Finally, you should not prune cherries, but if necessary, do so immediately after fruiting.

How to ruin a Japanese maple.

Why would I blog about the destruction of the Japanese maple?

Because people do it unintentionally all the time. Here's the deal; "You only know what you know." Including me.

So my job here is to make sure that all my followers/subscribers know what I know that they may not know.

Contrary to what many people think, Japanese maples are quite easy to grow and care for. They can be expensive and slow to grow, but overall they are quite easy to invite into your home.

And good too! And if you know a few simple things about Japanese maples in general, you'll know how to make them look great and perform at full speed.

What you need to know about Japanese maples.

Most, but not all Japanese maples are grafted.

This means that the beautiful tree you are growing in your yard is actually growing on the roots of the more common but extremely hardy Japanese maple.

You should know this because often shoots grow from the rootstock and these suckers need to be removed as soon as they appear because they are very different from the plant you bought.

If you allow them to grow, they will overtake your beautiful plant and completely ruin its appearance.

Dreamed of Maples: interpretation of the Angelic Dream Book

Why see Maple:

Japanese Maple - An elegant tree with leaves that come in a stunning range of colors, it symbolizes the wisdom of Japan and is actually much stronger than it appears. In dreams, maples can symbolize the country itself if they are dreamed of in the form of a bonsai, or indicate a serene state of mind, especially if they grow near water. If you cannot touch the tree or it is sick, your subconscious mind is indicating that you are striving for beauty and peace in your life.
